Your cancer, your life - blood tests (checking the function of all the organs)

YOUR CANCER, YOUR LIFE - BLOOD TESTS (CHECKING THE FUNCTION OF ALL THE ORGANS)
Of course, they are also very important in assessing how extensive and serious the situation is once cancer is definitely diagnosed. Blood tests are necessary to check the function of all the organs, the strength and purity of the blood, the balance of different minerals and hormones in it and so on. There is more about all this in the next chapter.
There are practitioners who will tell you they can definitely diagnose cancer, or even the tendency to cancer, on a blood test. With the following exceptions, this is not true. Firstly, as I have explained, the actual malignant cells can be seen in the blood in leukaemia, and sometimes myeloma or lymphoma. Secondly, there is a particular rare type of cancer of the testes (malignant teratoma) which can release a hormone into the blood called Auman chorionic gonadotrophs (HCG for short). This hormone is normally found only in the blood of pregnant women. When found in a man's blood it definitely means that man has this particular type of cancer. I know of no other instances where cancer can conclusively be diagnosed by a blood test. There are other cancers which can release large amounts of certain chemicals and hormones into the blood. When these chemicals and hormones are discovered by blood tests they do make your doctor very suspicious of cancer. However, with the one exception of HCG in a male, there are always other possible causes for these abnormalities. They can only be put down to cancer after the cancer is located and biopsied.
