With such a simple but elegant system, why and how do things go wrong? Why does the average Australian (infant, child, adult) manage to have two to four respiratory infections a year?
Simply this. Whilst the respiratory tract has a high degree of natural protection, built up over the years from the moment of birth, it is very susceptible to germs invading from outside. Infections having direct access to the sterile interior of the lungs will inevitably manage to get a toehold sooner or later. It is simply a matter of time.
A person whose general health is below normal has a much higher chance of becoming infected, for his or her resistance factors are not high enough to quell invading germs. Getting wet and temporarily chilled (common in cold, wet, winter weather) will also allow germs to get a foothold. Overheating, followed by a drying out of the airways, then sudden chilling is another well-known reason. So is being in an area in which sick persons are constantly spraying millions of germs into the atmosphere, by coughing and sneezing, and simply by talking. Millions of germs may be inhaled unsuspectingly by those around, and chances of an infection are high. Lack of adequate sleep, poor hygiene, being in over-crowded housing, schooling or work environments and lowered resistance from any cause all predispose to recurring infections of the respiratory system.
That is why maintaining a high level of general health for children is essential. It will help keep them fit and well and free from many of the invading germs ever present. They are always ready to pounce on unsuspecting victims and they certainly love children!
Let's look at some of the problems connected with this system. They have many names. A popular term used by doctors that embraces nearly all infections, from the nose down to the level of the lungs, is 'upper respiratory tract infection'. This is a nice general term encompassing many ills, and you will hear the term used often by doctors.
